Battle of
Barbourville | ||
Welcome to the Battle of Barboursville, Kentucky where the War Between the States claimed its first casualties on both sides. Lt. Robert Powell of the 19th Tenn. Vol. Inf. C.S.A. (first Confederate Officer killed on Kentucky soil) also Pvt. John Hendrickson of the Barboursville Home Guard U.S. died defending his home. Barbourville, Ky. as it is now known was sited for two very important reasons, the first armed conflict resulting in deaths of soldiers in both armies. Every third weekend in September at Hickory Minton Farm on South 225 the time slips back to that early foggy morning when 30 Barboursville Home Guards took a stand and tried to repel 800 advancing Confederate troops attempting to destroy Camp Andy Johnson a Union recruiting camp located in the city. The home guardsmen heard the approaching army and removed planks from the bridge leading into town, they fired their muskets into the fog and the conflict began. |
